Qld Sailor of the Year Changes Pace

No disrespect to the Moreton Bay to Mooloolaba Yacht Race, but when Bruce Arms sets sail in the 48-nautical mile contest on Saturday it will probably seem like a walk in the park for the 51-year old.
Arms claimed the record for the fastest solo circumnavigation of Australia - [79 hours, 27 minutes - last year.] Woops newspaper typo. He is also a two-time winner of the solo Trans-Tasman Yacht Race.
In April, he enhanced his reputation as one of the best sailors in the country at the gruelling Three Peaks Race in Tasmania, where he won the short-handed offshore sailing and endurance mountain running event alongside close friend and fellow world record breaking sailor Jessica atson.
So when the Queensland male sailor of the year for 2011-2012 lines up among the 16-strong fleet at Moreton Bay this weekend, he is unlikely to be intimidated by the "dash" up the coast in his record-breaking Big Wave Rider, a six-year-old 14m vessel.
"It's a short race....a bit of fun for us," he said.
Big Wave Rider can be crewed by as few as one person or as many as six.
"You can sail it by yourself except when it gets a bit hectic, so I think it will be petty easy this weekend when we have four onboard," he said.
Despite his relatively laid-back approach to the Multihull Yacht Club of Queensland event, the competitive drive within Arms will ensure he still chases a victory.
"We always fancy our chances and I think it's going to be an upwind race, which will help us too," he said.
But Big Wave Rider is likely to face some stern competition from Mike Hodges' 15.2m Renaissance.
Other Mooloolaba Yacht Club entries are Big Galah (Jim Williams), Predator (Trent Anstee), Roger Ramjet (Rob Stevenson), Catalina (Dale Low) and Sanuk (Shayne Farnell).
